"Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life." ESV
I hate to be the one to bear bad news, but did you know you are a liberal? Yes, it's true. If you embrace freedom, the idea of self-rule, and the American ideal of human rights, you are a classical liberal. The trouble with this ideology is this: we have an authority problem. Most of us have serious issues with true submission to real authority. And yet, to achieve what we really want, life and joy, we have to submit to the one who made us.
Instruction is another way of saying wisdom from God. We keep hold of her by practicing wisdom; by conforming to the way things are. In short: by obeying the creator, our true authority. Why should we cling so tenaciously to this obedience ("keep hold of instruction; guard her")? Because only in obedience to God can we attain life ("for she is your life")! In the long-game, every other path leads to certain death. Freedom as we define it (freedom from authority; self-rule) is really just the freedom to choose death.
Choose your verse:
"I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."
"Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life."
Big pictures are made of small brush strokes. Lives are made of individual decisions. Your choices today - choices between heeding instruction or forging your own way - are life and death decisions. Today, when you make the small choices, remember this simple proverb: "Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life."
