"The LORD by wisdom founded the earth;
by understanding he established the heavens;
by his knowledge the deeps broke open,
and the clouds drop down the dew." ESV
This reminds me of the speech Lady Wisdom herself gives in chapter 8:
". . . The LORD possessd me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. . . . "
One definition for wisdom I have been using is: skill for living. There is another definition I like just as much. It goes something like this: Wisdom is seeing how the universe works, and then conforming to it. This passage lends itself to just such a view of wisdom. By definition, wisdom is a recognition of how things are, because wisdom is a part of how God created things. Therefore, to ignore wisdom, or to refuse to walk according to wisdom, is to deny the basic fabric of reality - to live in violation of what exists. No wonder folly leads to disaster.
How will that idea affect you today? Hopefully you will remember this simple fact: there is a way things work here; if you would prosper, you must fulfill your proper role in the created order. What is your proper role? That is a question for another time.
